Moon Gate Garden Pasadena, California 1991:
This Estate is nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountain Range. In 1991 Glen Hampton garden designs was contacted by the Pasadena Showcase House of Design and asked to redesign the enclosed garden located off the his/hers master baths.
Landscape Designer Glen Hampton felt the space needed to be a private tranquil zen setting for reflection and relaxation after a hot shower or warm soak in the tub at the end of a stressful day.
Since the residences clean lines and contemporary architecture lended itself to the Japanese style of landscaping... An existing wood fence/gate located on one end of the small garden was removed and replaced with a moon gate entrance. Shoji screens made of marine plywood and faux finished to look like rice paper slide out from the moon shaped opening to provide privacy.
The owners of the estate had amassed and extensive contemporary art collection and were thrilled when Glen selected stone sculptor Paul Lindhard of Art City Studios to create and install the planned tsukubai water feature. Paul hand selected a vein of Onyx imported from New Mexico for the vertical element and basin of the tsukubai. The water pours from a bamboo pole into the basin, runs down a natural vein and disappears through the stone pebbles into an underground holding tank.
Landscape Designer Glen Hampton selected a simple plant pallet made up of red-leaf Japanese Maples, Azaleas, and Mondo Grass. A stone path leads through a timber bamboo forest to another sculpture by Paul Lindhard this one made of an Onyx obelisk with a large Mojave Marble winged globe at the top. The globe can be rotated and represents the movement of the human spirit through life. The dramatic garden lighting completes the desired Zen Gardens effect.

Tea House Garden Palos Verdes, California 1992:
This contemporary residence was built in the sixties in the community of Palos Verdes overlooking the Pacific Ocean. In 1991 Glen Hampton garden designs was contacted by its owner who had traveled extensively throughout the Orient. She had always wanted to turn her enclosed front courtyard into a Japanese style garden, but just hadn't found the right designer.
After viewing the Moon Gate Garden featured at that years Pasadena Showcase House of Design the client felt that Landscape Designer Glen Hampton could create the zen garden she desired.
The courtyard space with its tall redwood enclosure and mature pines backdrop was compatible with the Japanese style of landscaping. Landscape Designer Glen Hampton cleared the space of an existing Bermuda grass lawn and fruit trees and started with a clean slate.
A Teak Tea House structure with traditional Japanese Blue Tile Roofing was designed to be the focal point of the garden. Added to that was a koi pond with a traditional Tsukubai water feature and Japanese style zig-zag bridge leading to the tea house.
A plant pallet made up of: Red-Leaf Maple Trees; Azaleas; Fortnight Lilies; Heavenly Bamboo; Japanese Quince; and Mondo Grass were used throughout the courtyard. All ground surfaces were covered with Lomita Pebble to mimic a Japanese Style sand garden. Hand selected boulders were placed in traditional stone groupings. At night, the dramatic garden lighting reflects the entire garden in the koi pond.
All of the traditional Japanese Garden elements selected combine to complete the desired Zen Gardens effect.

Zen Bath Garden Los Angeles, California 1998:
This contemporary residence was built in the seventies on the north facing slope of the San Fernando Valley. It's secluded location along the Mulholland Corridor commands sweeping views across the valley below. In 1998 Glen Hampton garden designs was contacted by its owner and asked to remodel the master bath garden.
The garden was a nondescript/uninteresting space located on a floating deck. However because of its location outside the bating tubs floor to ceiling window it was an important part of the master bath design. Landscape Designer Glen Hampton felt that the all glass contemporary structure and its interiors were compatible with the Japanese style of landscaping. His desire was to create a private serene zen setting to be viewed rather than lived in.
A tranquil black granite "Mizubachi Fountain" from Stone Forest was set into the deck as a central focal point when viewed from the bathing tubs window. A Bouquet Canyon Stone planter was installed and planted with a giant timber bamboo clump depicting the forest. Granite boulders were hand selected and placed in traditional Japanese stone groupings.
The most interesting challenge faced by the landscape designer was his desire to create a maintenance free traditional sand garden that could be walked on without disturbing the sand pattern. This challenge was met by using Stone Resin a material used by the tile industry to mimic the look of natural stone.

Zen Estate Bel Air, California 2005 Originally 2002:
A former client of Glen Hampton garden designs purchased this estate in early 2000. When Landscape Designer Glen Hampton first saw the property the wood clad residence reminded him of a Japanese Style Mountain House... The brick clad chimneys, motor court, and paving surfaces, and existing swimming pool decks and walls did not.
Glen had known the client for many years and was familiar with his love of Asian design that had grown from his experiences living in Hong Kong early on in the clients career. By 2000 the client had amassed a fine collection of Asian Antiques and Sculpture from his many business trips to the Orient over the years.
Because of Landscape Designer Glen Hampton's relationship and knowledge of the clients tastes he was given free rein to design and implement the garden as he envisioned it. Glen's desire to create a Zen Gardens setting for his clients collection, spiritual refurbishment, and relaxation lead to the creation of the zen estate as it appears today.
The Triplicities elements (Fire, Air, Water, and Earth) were the inspiration for this garden design: A fireplace was added to one end of the pool for the Fiery-Triplicity; Ornamental grasses were used in the landscape plantings... their movement in the breeze creating the Aery-Triplicity; The koi pond, swimming pool, and spa for the Watry Triplicity; And the use of natural Bluestone on the hardscape surfaces and the hand carved sculptural elements (The pools water basins and spa water feature) by Martin Rodriguez for the Earthy-Triplicity.
The residences Interior Designer Ginger Barber was consulted on the gardens outdoor furnishings.
This estate garden was installed by Rodriguez and Satterswait Landscapes.
