Villa Arroyo Dulce Vineyard and Winery Bonsall, California 1999 Originally 1993:

In 1993 Glen Hampton garden designs was contracted by a previous client and asked to design their retirement estate. Collaborating with Minkler Building Designs and Michael Pierce General Contractors Landscape Designer Glen Hampton planned the layout for the main villa, guest villa/studio, winery, as well as the gardens and vineyard.

The barren six acre site, set in a valley reminiscent of Tuscany, set the stage for the Italianate Mediterranean Villa and Winery. The property presented an interesting challenge... Its topography started out flat near the street, then dropped into a bowl in the center with a graded drive on the left leading to another knoll, that drops off into an arroyo with a small year round stream.

Garden Designer Glen Hampton created an iron gated entry leading along a drive bordered with Italian Cypress trees. The villa is entered from a separate pedestrian gate that steps down across a sunken garden with decomposed granite path, framed by citrus trees placed in traditional Italian terra cotta planters. The entrance terrace and portico are reached by steps rising up around a classic tiled entry fountain. All paving surfaces, wall caps, and fountain/swimming pool copings were fabricated from Cantera Stone imported from Mexico.

The back terrace leads passed another tiled fountain, overlooking the rear garden, down a grand staircase, passed the swimming pool, to the kitchen garden and guest villa/studio. All plantings on the property are typical of those found in the Mediterranean regions of Europe. A small pond with Italian jar/boulder water feature, leads you to the vineyard staircase.

The winery is tucked into the hillside, below the guest villa. The view from the wineries pergola covered terrace of the vineyard, small stream, the natural unspoiled five-hundred acre preserve and hills beyond, is reminiscent of the Italian countryside.
