cal spas

Cal-A-Vie Health Spa Vista, California 1986:

This World Class Health Spa was created between 1983 and 1986 by a group of friends who had frequented the famous "Golden Door Spa" in Escondido, California. In 1983 Glen Hampton garden designs was contracted to create the gardens at Cal-A-Vie.

The spa is nestled on 200 acres amongst rolling hills in a secluded valley just North of San Diego and Escondido in the community of Vista, California. The Mediterranean-style complex is made up of a series of villas surrounding a courtyard. Entering Cal-A-Vie you drive up a winding road and emerge through and Olive Grove over-looking what appears to be a Mediterranean Village nestled on the hillside. The original owners went to great pains to make the complex an authentic Mediterranean setting.

All of the natural stone used for the garden walls, ponds, etc. is indigenes to the site... Every rock was quarried from the 200 acres surrounding the complex. All of the roof tiles and pavers were handmade to order and shipped from Tecate Mexico.

Landscape Designer Glen Hampton designed the unique gardens to blend rather than compete with the architecture and the natural California landscape surrounding the spa complex... The result is a secluded garden setting that instills a feeling of peace and tranquility at one with nature, far away from the stressfulness of our daily lives and distractions.

entrance gates

 Calabasas Hills Community and Estates
 Calabasas, California 2006:

Calabasas was once a sleepy suburb of Los Angeles, located at the West end of the San Fernando Valley. In the last few decades it has been transformed into a high end community of multimillion dollar homes, most of which are located within gated communities.

In late 2005 Glen Hampton garden designs was contacted to by the Home Owners Association and asked to remodel the outdated Calabasas Hills Community and Estates: entrance walls; gate houses; and water features.

The original entrance walls were plain stucco; The gate houses lacked detail; and the water features cascaded down pale blue tiles...The look screamed 70's-80's Contemporary. What the Association desired was an updated look more in keeping with the rustic setting of the natural hills surrounding the community.

Landscape Designer Glen Hampton achieved this look by: Veneering the entrance walls with El Dorado Stone, installing new raised letters, plantings, and lighting; Creating stone details to enhance the bland architecture of the gate houses; and completely redesigning the entrance water features into rustic stone cascades. The unique gardens look is one of rustic simplicity in keeping with the surrounding Calabasas countryside.
