This Mediterranean Villa was designed by the prestigious architectural firm of Marston-Van Pelt and Maybury in the 1920’s. The Estate is located in an upscale neighborhood right across the street from the world famous Huntington Library. In 1982 Glen Hampton garden designs was contacted by the Pasadena Showcase House of Design and asked to redesign the porte-cochère entrance. Landscape Designer Glen Hampton brought in a faux finish artist to patina the interior walls of the existing space, an effect that brought out the colors of the existing Malibu Potteries (1926-32) tile surrounding the front door. The existing wood ceiling beams were restored and a queried tile floor was added to define the space. Two Italian sandstone lions stand guard at the entry portal... Italian terra cotta planters filled with lush plantings and orchids were added to enhance the setting. Opposite the entrance, through an archway, was an unused space which the designer turned into a water garden. The owners of the residence had amassed a contemporary art collection which was on display in the entry foyer... So, rather than select a traditional Italian fountain for the water garden Glen chose a contemporary piece, "The Moon is Rising" by sculptor Paul Kasper, to be the entry focal point and add a touch of whimsy to the otherwise traditional porte-cochère entrance. Dramatic night lighting completes this Mediterranean Gardens Design.
