 Mediterranean Villa
 San Marino, California 1982:

This Mediterranean Villa was designed by the prestigious architectural firm of Marston-Van Pelt and Maybury in the 1920’s. The Estate is located in an upscale neighborhood right across the street from the world famous Huntington Library. In 1982 Glen Hampton garden designs was contacted by the Pasadena Showcase House of Design and asked to redesign the porte-cochère entrance to the Mediterranean gardens.

Landscape Designer Glen Hampton brought in a faux finish artist to patina the interior walls of the existing space, an effect that brought out the colors of the existing Malibu Potteries (1926-32) tile surrounding the front door. The existing wood ceiling beams were restored and a queried tile floor was added to define the space. Two Italian sandstone lions stand guard at the entry portal... Italian terra cotta planters filled with lush plantings and orchids were added to enhance the setting.

Opposite the entrance, through an archway, was an unused space which the designer turned into a water garden. The owners of the residence had amassed a contemporary art collection which was on display in the entry foyer... So, rather than select a traditional Italian fountain for the water garden Glen chose a contemporary piece, "The Moon is Rising" by sculptor Paul Kasper, to be the entry focal point and add a touch of whimsy to the otherwise traditional porte-cochère entrance. Dramatic night lighting completes this Mediterranean Gardens Design.

This garden was featured in Designers West Magazine - 1982

 Mediterranean Estate
 San Marino, California 1984:

Located in the picturesque tree lined community of San Marino, this Mediterranean style residence was built in the 1930's. When Glen Hampton garden designs was hired by football legend Merlin Olsen to redesign his existing gardens, it consisted of: a sweeping front lawn and a few shrubs; a broken up concrete driveway; and a 60's dated swimming pool with a statue of Neptune pouring water into the pool.

Landscape Designer Glen Hampton decided to give the house a presence on the street by creating a grand staircase of Endicott Pavers and Arizona Flagstone leading to the front door. The old driveway was rebuilt with Endicott bullnose bricks and pavers. Entering the estate through the porte-cochère you come upon a custom made tiled Peacock Fountain, designed as a focal point to be viewed from the library.

The existing swimming pool was remodeled by: installing a raised Endicott bullnose coping; Tiling the raised bond beam to the upper terrace with custom made water lily tile (an effect that makes the lilies appear to float on the water); and installing a custom made pre-cast concrete shell pouring into the pool, creating a dramatic water feature. A new jogging spa was installed at the end of the pool with water jets spurting from its four corners. Viewed from the residence the water jets along with the fire pit, placed directly behind the spa, create a fire and water focal point after dark.

A flagstone terrace, for relaxing solitude, was located in an abandoned side yard with a custom made tiled Flamingo Fountain and lush plantings. All custom made tiles and fountains were created by the Barbara Vantrease Beall Studios.

A arbor was constructed across the back of the property overlooking the grove and arroyo which is entered through a gazebo garden located on the north side of the estate. All garden designs elements blend to create the perfect colorful Mediterranean Gardens, for lazy afternoon relaxation and slumber. At night the Mediterranean gardens illumination creates a magical effect when viewed from the residence and surrounding terraces.

This garden was featured in LA Times Home Magazine - 1984

 Italian Villa
 Pasadena, California 1984:

In the late 1920's a wealthy family from the east cost built this Italian Style Villa on four acres overlooking Pasadena's Arroyo Seco. In 1984 Glen Hampton garden designs was contacted by the Pasadena Showcase House of Design and asked to redesign the entry courtyard.

The existing space, enclosed and viewed from the circular entrance drive, contained an antique Italian marble bench and urns... But the greatest find, discovered while cleaning out the overgrown plantings, was a tile roofed alcove, its niche hung with an authentic Luca Della Robbia Virgin and Child Relief. The alcove was originally created as a focal point to be viewed, across an Italian terra cotta walkway leading from the porte-cochère entry.

Landscape Designer Glen Hampton brought in a faux finish artist to patina the interior walls of the existing niche with a faux Malachite Stone finish, to complement the Della Robbia Relief. Animal topiaries were installed to frame the setting and add a touch of whimsy to the gardens formal design. Colorful borders and lush shrubbrey plantings enclosed the dichondra lawns, set with fountain parterre gardens as focal points bordering both sides of the tiled walkway. The result is an entry courtyard garden to this classic Italian Villa, done in the Mediterranean Gardens style.

It's interesting to note that this villa was occupied by the outrageous David Lee Roth and Van Halen, a local Pasadena band, at the time this garden was created. Several of their best tracks were laid down in the Villa's basement recording studio.

 Malibu Hacienda
 Malibu, California 1989:

Robert L. Earl Architects designed this California hacienda on a barren five acre parcel, in a Malibu canyon setting, for actor - producer Michael Landon and his wife Cindy. Glen Hampton garden designs was contracted to design the gardens from scratch.

Landscape Designer Glen Hampton created a privacy wall made of Santa Barbara Sandstone with large custom made wood entry gates that rolled open to reveal a Bouquet Canyon Stone motor court with central fountain. The residence surrounds a swimming pool tiled with glass mosaics imported from Italy. The pool courtyard columns, paving, wall caps and pool fountain were fabricated from Cantera Stone imported from Mexico.

A tiled fountain side entrance patio welcomes guests though custom designed doors into the pool patio foyer. Iron gates lead under a bougainvillea covered pergola, passed the stained glass bird aviary, to a side dining terrace, with "Sad Return" bronze sculpture fountain as its focal point.

A stone gazebo with lily pond is the focal point from the colonnade which runs the entire rear length of the hacienda. The side yard is taken up with a football field length playing field and a tennis court with viewing pavilion. The most spectacular view of the property can be seen from the upper terrace of the stable on the knoll, which housed Mr. Landon's Mustang horses.

Full grown trees and numerous boxed sized plant species were brought in to insure that the garden looked liked it had been there for years on the day it was completed. Lighting designer John Watson flew in personally, from Texas, to oversee the installation of the gardens night illumination. The residences Interior Designer Ron Wilson was consulted on this gardens outdoor fountains, furnishings and accessories.

This Hacienda and its Mediterranean Gardens are the result of a perfect collaboration between the clients, architect, interior designer, tradesman, and Landscape Designer Glen Hampton.

Villa Arroyo Dulce Vineyard and Winery
 Bonsall, California 1999 Originally 1993:

In 1993 Glen Hampton garden designs was contracted by a previous client and asked to design their retirement estate. Collaborating with Minkler Building Designs, Landscape Designer Glen Hampton planned the layout for the main villa, guest villa/studio, winery, as well as the Mediterranean Gardens and vineyard.

The barren six acre site, set in a valley reminiscent of Tuscany, set the stage for the Italianate Mediterranean Villa and Winery. The property presented an interesting challenge... Its topography started out flat near the street, then dropped into a bowl in the center with a graded drive on the left leading to another knoll, that drops off into an arroyo with a small year round stream.

Landscape Designer Glen Hampton created an iron gated entry leading along a drive bordered with Italian Cypress trees. The villa is entered from a separate pedestrian gate that steps down across a sunken garden with decomposed granite path, framed by citrus trees placed in traditional Italian terra cotta planters. The entrance terrace and portico are reached by steps rising up around a classic tiled entry fountain. All paving surfaces, wall caps, and fountain/swimming pool copings were fabricated from Cantera Stone imported from Mexico.

The back terrace leads passed another tiled fountain, overlooking the rear garden, down a grand staircase, passed the swimming pool, to the kitchen garden and guest villa/studio. All plantings on the property are typical of those found in the Mediterranean regions of Europe. A small pond with Italian jar/boulder water feature, leads you to the vineyard staircase.

The winery is tucked into the hillside, below the guest villa. The view from the wineries pergola covered terrace of the vineyard, small stream, the natural unspoiled five-hundred acre preserve and hills beyond, is reminiscent of the Italian countryside.

 Casa de Campo
 Altadena, California 2002:

When Glen Hampton garden designs was contacted in 2000 and asked to design the gardens for this residence, it was a 1950's stucco box on a non-descript private street corner. Luckily it was located at the terminus of a T-intersection with a historical street lined with small Mediterranean style casas built in the nineteen-twenties. These casas became the inspiration for Architect Michael D. Robey's transformation of the stucco box into the Casa de Campo as it appears today.

Landscape Designer Glen Hampton created the Mediterranean gardens to compliment Robey's architectural design. A tiled staircase entrance leads up through plantings of cactus, succulents, native plants and olive trees... past a rustic rose garden overrun with Lantana and Rosemary to antique entry gates. The courtyard continues the wild plantings and incorporates a small fountain.

Rounding the corner into the side garden you come upon a lawn area bordered by a wall lined with Loquat trees and espalier pear and apple trees. An iron bench with small fountain and a decorative mirror reflecting the garden are tucked into a secluded spot behind the patio fireplace.

The clients had spoken to other landscape designers who had informed them that their backyard was too small for a swimming pool. However Glen had a vision for a Mediterranean styled pool that would become the rear garden's focal point, and fit perfectly into the setting. The small 16x22 foot swimming pool incorporates an alcove wall fountain, pouring into a glass mosaic tiled basin, through a Moorish styled rill, flowing into a tiled spa, and cascading into the pool. The raised wall fountain and terrace at the back of the pool adds depth to the garden.

A patio runs across the rear of the residence with a welcoming outdoor fireplace as its focal point. Because of the North exposure Glen chose to provide shade by designing a beamed pergola structure with a series of vellum awnings that provide shelter from the hot California sun in summer, but can be left open to let natural light flow into the residence on cloudy days. Because the clients had sensitive skin, but loved to swim, Glen designed a 12x36 foot vellum awning to glide closed with the touch of a button, providing shade over the pools swimming lane.

The Casa's architecture and Mediterranean gardens combine to provide the perfect termination to the casa lined street. Landscape Designer Glen Hampton considers the greatest compliment, to his and Architect Michael Robey's achievements, to be the fact that many people have commented that the Casa de Campo looks like it was constructed at the same time as the 1920's residences lining this historical Altadena street.

 Paradise Cove Estate
 Malibu, California 2006 Originally 1992:

This five acre estate runs thirty-five feet into the Pacific Ocean with a once private beach. For many years it was the home of actress Julie Andrews and Blake Edwards (His famous "Pink Panther" was written in the estates guest house).

In the early 1990's clients of Interior Designer Ron Wilson purchased the estate. They razed the main residence and hired Barsocchini & Associates Architects to create a Tuscan Villa overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Ron Wilson, who Landscape Designer Glen Hampton had worked with on Michael Landon's Malibu Hacienda, referred Glen Hampton garden designs to completely redesign the gardens.

A new main entrance gate with fountain motor court welcomes you. A long entrance driveway leads you through lush green lawns framed by tropical plantings, past a clay tennis court cabana and into a Bouquet Canyon Stone paved front entrance motor court, with a hand painted peacock tiled wall fountain as its focal point. Exiting the residence on the beach side you find yourself in a relaxing Mediterranean spa setting overlooking the pool with spectacular views of the blue Pacific beyond.

In the late 1990's Dodi Fayed purchased the property for himself and Princess Diana of Wales. Unfortunately, as often happens in the vulnerable world of Landscape Design, the estate gardens suffered from neglect over the years following the untimely deaths of Diana and Dodi Fayed in 1997.

Fortunately, new owners purchased the estate in early 2000. They set about refurbishing the residence, and in 2006 contacted Glen Hampton garden designs to help them restore the Paradise Cove Estates gardens to their original beauty.

The 1992 estate garden remodel was installed by Pacific Landscape Services. The 2002 estate garden remodel was installed by DG Landworks Inc.

As a tribute to Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed, This Paradise Cove Estate and its gardens were featured in Architectural Digest Magazine - 1998
