Located in the picturesque tree lined community of San Marino, this Mediterranean style residence was built in the 1930's. When Glen Hampton garden designs was hired by football legend Merlin Olsen to redesign his existing gardens, it consisted of: a sweeping front lawn and a few shrubs; a broken up concrete driveway; and a 60's dated swimming pool with a statue of Neptune pouring water into the pool. Glen decided to give the house a presence on the street by creating a grand staircase of Endicott Pavers and Arizona Flagstone leading to the front door. The old driveway was rebuilt with Endicott bullnose bricks and pavers. Entering the estate through the porte-cochère you come upon a custom made tiled Peacock Fountain, designed as a focal point to be viewed from the library. The existing swimming pool was remodeled by: installing a raised Endicott bullnose coping; Tiling the raised bond beam to the upper terrace with custom made water lily tile (an effect that makes the lilies appear to float on the water); and installing a custom made pre-cast concrete shell pouring into the pool, creating a dramatic water feature. A new jogging spa was installed at the end of the pool with water jets spurting from its four corners. Viewed from the residence the water jets along with the fire pit, placed directly behind the spa, create a fire and water focal point after dark. A flagstone terrace, for relaxing solitude, was located in an abandoned side yard with a custom made tiled Flamingo Fountain and lush plantings. All custom made tiles and fountains were created by the Barbara Vantrease Beall Studios. An arbor was constructed across the back of the property overlooking the grove and arroyo which is entered through a gazebo garden located on the north side of the estate. All garden design elements blend to create the perfect colorful Mediterranean Style garden, for lazy afternoon relaxation and slumber. At night the garden illumination creates a magical effect when viewed from the residence and surrounding terraces. LA Times Home Magazine - 1984 ![]() ALL CONTENT on this Site Copyright Protected
