Malibu Hacienda, Malibu California 1989:

Robert L. Earl Architects designed this California hacienda on a barren five acre parcel, in a Malibu canyon setting, for actor - producer Michael Landon and his wife Cindy. Glen Hampton garden designs was contracted to design the gardens from scratch.

Landscape Designer Glen Hampton created a privacy wall made of Santa Barbara Sandstone with large custom made wood entry gates that rolled open to reveal a Bouquet Canyon Stone motor court with central fountain. The residence surrounds a swimming pool tiled with glass mosaics imported from Italy. The pool courtyard columns, paving, wall caps and pool fountain were fabricated from Cantera Stone imported from Mexico.

A tiled fountain side entrance patio welcomes guests though custom designed doors into the pool patio foyer. Iron gates lead under a bougainvillea covered pergola, passed the stained glass bird aviary, to a side dining terrace, with "Sad Return" bronze sculpture fountain as its focal point.

A stone gazebo with lily pond is the focal point from the colonnade which runs the entire rear length of the hacienda. The side yard is taken up with a football field length playing field and a tennis court with viewing pavilion. The most spectacular view of the property can be seen from the upper terrace of the stable on the knoll, which housed Mr. Landon's Mustang horses.

Full grown trees and numerous boxed sized plant species were brought in to insure that the garden looked liked it had been there for years on the day it was completed. Lighting designer John Watson flew in personally, from Texas, to oversee the installation of the gardens night illumination. The residences Interior Designer Ron Wilson was consulted on the gardens outdoor fountains, furnishings and accessories.

This Hacienda and its Mediterranean Gardens are the result of a perfect collaboration between the clients, architect, interior designer, tradesman, and Landscape Designer Glen Hampton.
