Gallery Terrace San Marino, California 1986:
This Estate is located in San Marino and was originally built in the early 1930’s for the Holiday family, relations of Henry E. Huntington who created the Huntington Library.
In 1986 Glen Hampton garden designs was contacted by the Pasadena Showcase House of Design and asked to restore the existing rear garden terrace. Although the residence is in the California Monterey Colonial architectural style, Landscape Designer Glen Hampton decided to have some fun and create an outdoor art gallery terrace.
An avid collector of modern art himself, Glen ended up contacting several unknown artists whose works he was familiar with. A paper mache cat appears to leap over a hand forged metal sofa with hand painted canvas fabrics creating the focal point of the lounging terrace. Ceramic sculptures, are displayed on the gallery terrace. All of the dining terrace furnishings were made by an artist. The table was set with utilitarian everyday one-of-a-kind items made by numerous California based artists.
Landscape Designer Glen Hampton selected succulents, cactus, and grasses as the plant palette, for their sculpture qualities. The dramatic night lighting completes the desired effect, through the use of custom designed gallery lighting set off by a colorful abstract neon painting.

Colorful Garden Encino, California 2005:
This Encino residence was built in the sixties on a double lot with a shared driveway. In 2005 Glen Hampton garden designs was contacted by the owners and asked to redesign the existing asphalt entrance drive; spruce up the entry courtyard; and remodel the outdated man-made rock swimming pool located in a small rear garden.
The driveway was resurfaced using the Appian Brick System "Random Design Pattern". The entrance to the entry courtyard was created by constructing a weathered copper faux finished gate and fence in a geometric pattern. The entry courtyard was spruced up with Chinese glazed planters. New garden plantings included succulents, cactus, and grasses, selected for their sculptural qualities.
Landscape Designer Glen Hampton's inspiration for the swimming pool remodel came from the interiors of the residence filled with colorful geometric carpets, furnishings, and art works collected in the 1970's and 80's. The existing pool was stripped of its man-rock/boulders. New glass tiles were installed to enhance the pools existing water features. Plaster finished walls painted in purple hues brings the colorful interiors into the garden. Garden accents were added to the pool garden, include new plantings; Chinese glazed planters; and exterior art works... outdoor paintings of plants, and a whimsical goat sculpture grazing on the hillside above the pool. The dramatic night lighting completes the desired effect.
This garden remodel was installed by DG Landworks Inc. and CCI Pools.

Pasadena Estate Pasadena, California 2006:
This Mid-Twentieth-Century Contemporary Estate is located in the San Rafael area of Pasadena, overlooking the Arroyo Seco with spectacular views of the San Gabriel Mountain Range to the North and sweeping view of the Historic Colorado Bridge and the City of Pasadena to the East. Previous owners had contracted with Glen Hampton garden designs to completely renovate the existing gardens. Garden plans were drawn up and awaiting the completion of the residence restoration, when the clients decided to sell.
In 2006 Glen Hampton garden designs was contacted by the new owners and asked to revise the proposed garden plans to suit the needs of their young family. Because of the new owners passion for mid-twentieth-century design and retro furnishings, Landscape designer Glen Hampton decided to create an updated version of a mid-twentieth-century contemporary landscape. Glen was inspired by the works of the modernist Landscape Architect Garrett Eckbo. Originally based in San Francisco, the Landscape Architectural Firm of Eckbo, Royston, and Williams opened a branch office in Pasadena in 1948.
The previous owners had installed a glass-aluminum garage door which became the inspiration for the glass entry gates, fencing screens and pedestrian gates throughout the property. A combination of aggregate and washed finished concrete surfaces covers the entry motor court, walkways, and patio areas.
An architectural wall fountain tiled in glass mosaics provides the focal point leading to the dining terrace. The dining terraces contemporary styled cook center has a poured in place concrete counter top with an integrated sink. The built-in concrete cantilevered dining table, with retro molded plastic chairs, provides a sculptural landscape element.
A contemporary fire pit filled with Indgio fireplace crystals and surrounded by formed concrete bench walls provides a warm inviting setting to view the Arroyo after dark on cool chilly evenings. The contemporary natural concrete planters were selected for their clean lines and geometric forms. Succulents, cactus, and grasses were chosen as the plant palette, for their sculpture qualities. Custom designed landscape night lighting completes the desired effect.
This estate garden was installed by DG Landworks Inc.

Bel Air Estate Los Angeles, California 2006:
In 2006 Glen Hampton garden designs was contacted by a movie producer who had just purchased an estate in the exclusive community of Bel Air. The estate sits on a south facing knoll high above the Los Angeles basin with a 180 degree view that sweeps from a rugged canyon on the west, south out over the basin to the blue Pacific, and all the way to downtown Los Angeles in the East.
The sprawling one floor residence had been remodeled by a previous owner, with walls splashed in color and lots of stone paving and cactus. The new owner desired something more simplistic closer to the early-twentieth-century contemporary architectural designs made popular by architects like Richard Neutra. However his taste in gardens was more formal and uniform but still simplistic.
Landscape Designer Glen Hampton scraped the existing landscape and started with a clean palette, retaining only the existing infinity swimming pool. Simplistic concrete paving replaced stone walkways and patios. The valley views from the living room were enhanced by a foreground water-feature focal point with a sunken conversation seating area and fire pit designed to enjoy the city lights on chilly evenings. The once black bottom infinity pool was re-plastered in white resulting in a traditional mid-century aqua blue finish. A stone finished, glassed backed, outdoor fireplace with Flat Screen TV above replaced a nondescript fire pit on the pool terrace. A new lower level lawn area was added to the rear garden, accessed via a cantilevered concrete staircase with water cascade spilling down one side.
Plant materials were selected for their formal geometric shapes. The planting color palette consists of varying shades of green with white and lavender accents. The night garden lighting has been softened so as not to distract from the dramatic city lights.
This estate remodel was installed by Pastrana Construction and GC AquaScapes.
