Bel Air Estate Gallery Los Angeles, California 2006:

In 2006 Glen Hampton garden designs was contacted by a movie producer who had just purchased an estate in the exclusive community of Bel Air. The estate sits on a south facing knoll high above the Los Angeles basin with a 180 degree view that sweeps from a rugged canyon on the west, south out over the basin to the blue Pacific, and all the way to downtown Los Angeles in the East.

The sprawling one floor residence had been remodeled by a previous owner, with walls splashed in color and lots of stone paving and cactus. The new owner desired something more simplistic closer to the early-twentieth-century contemporary architectural designs made popular by architects like Richard Neutra. However his taste in gardens was more formal and uniform but still simplistic.

Landscape Designer Glen Hampton scraped the existing landscape and started with a clean palette, retaining only the existing infinity swimming pool. Simplistic concrete paving replaced stone walkways and patios. The valley views from the living room were enhanced by a foreground water-feature focal point with a sunken conversation seating area and fire pit designed to enjoy the city lights on chilly evenings. The once black bottom infinity pool was replastered in white resulting in a traditional mid-century aqua blue finish. A stone finished, glassed backed, outdoor fireplace with Flat Screen TV above replaced a nondescript fire pit on the pool terrace. A new lower level lawn area was added to the rear garden, accessed via a cantilevered concrete staircase with water cascade spilling down one side.

Plant materials were selected for their formal geometric shapes. The planting color palette consists of varying shades of green with white and lavender accents. The night garden lighting has been softened so as not to distract from the dramatic city lights.

The estate remodel was installed by Pastrana Construction and GC AquaScapes.
